ICRC President Peter Maurer calls for focus on issues of detention and missing in Iraq

ICRC - News Release No. 17/74

(New York) – Today in a side event of the UN General Assembly, ICRC President Peter Maurer spotlighted the issues of detention and missing people in Iraq. In his remarks to the Ministerial-Level event on “Saving Lives, protecting lives, and rebuilding lives: developing a common agenda with and for Iraqi people,” Mr. Maurer said:

“For the ICRC to effectively and efficiently carry out its humanitarian work in places of detention and in screening centres, we must have early access to those arrested, including security detainees, in line with our proven methods of working. The relatives of those detained, mainly women and children, should not be marginalized or stigmatized. Justice must prevail over vengeance.”
