Bangladesh: Rakhine Crisis

As the 2018 monsoon ends, the cyclone season draws near. For Bangladeshi authorities and the population, this means heightened preparedness measures to mitigate risk and preserve life.

With the influx of over 700,000 forcibly displaced people from Rakhine now cramped into camp settlements concentrated in the districts of Cox’s Bazar and Teknaf, the area is even more vulnerable. Once forested hills have been cleared to accommodate families seeking safety, but the mass of bamboo and plastic shelters on the nude hillsides will not withstand a direct hit from a cyclone.

With this stark reality in mind, Red Cross and Red Cross partners are working together with camp communities, government authorities and other humanitarian actors to train and equip the host and guest populations to prepare for and respond to possible disaster.
