Nigeria: floods

On 13 July 2018, seven states in Nigeria experienced devastating floods, displacing thousands of people and injuring many others. It has devastated crops and killed many livestock that communities rely on to earn an income and support their families. The Nigerian Red Cross Society has been supporting an initial 5,500 vulnerable people in the worst affected states, focusing on providing community-based health; water, hygiene and sanitation; and basic food and non-food items. However, the needs have exponentially increased in the last week. Torrential rains have caused Nigeria’s two major rivers – Niger River and Benue River – to overflow, devastating communities nestled near its banks. On 18 September, the government announced a state of emergency in the worst affected states: Kogi, Niger, Anambra and Delta. Cholera cases have already been found in parts of the country, raising concern of its continued spread. The extent of the damages is severe, with more than 1.4 million people affected by flooding in 700 different communities.
