Ten days ago, the world’s strongest storm so far this year, Typhoon Mangkhut, made landfall as a category 4 typhoon in Philippines’ Cagayan Valley province, affecting 2.1 million people in 31 provinces.

The Philippine Red Cross, supported by IFRC and other partners, has been in action since before the typhoon hit. On 13 September, IFRC released 83,017 Swiss francs (86,000 US dollars/4.6 million Philippines pesos) from its Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) and 18 September, an emergency appeal was launched by IFRC, seeking 2.7 million Swiss francs to enable the Philippine Red Cross to support 100,000 people for 12 months. So far, the Red Cross has reached 10,457 adults and children with psychosocial support, 7,111 people with safe drinking water, and served 17,388 hot meals.
