World Red Cross Red Crescent Day, 8th of May is celebrated every year as the birthday anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Red Cross and Red Crescent (RCRC) Movement, which has grown to become the largest international humanitarian movement with 191 Red Cross national societies around the world.
Today, on World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, we recognize the incredible contribution and achievements of the millions of medical staff around the world who keep their commitment to humanity every day.
This year more than ever, we are proud of the work that thousands of colleagues and volunteers are doing around the world to provide assistance, protection and services to people in need. Today we all unite as a Movement, and take a moment to clap for our heroes – colleagues and volunteers on the frontline of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic but also those who courageously provide humanitarian assistance to vulnerable people in different hotspots around the world.
The ICRC Belgrade Regional Delegation has put at disposal its limited resources to eight Red Cross National Societies in the region as immediate assistance in their COVID-19 response and processed numerous requests from different state institutions. The fight against the pandemic is not over yet and the ICRC is constantly processing more requests for assistance in order to help communities in their struggle to overcome the virus.
It has been an outstanding cooperation between all three components of the Movement, International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC), Red Cross national societies and the ICRC united under the same objective to provide efficient services to vulnerable communities during the pandemic. It goes without saying that one of the greatest assets we have is our human capital and their tireless commitment. We believe that it is with this spirit that we will overcome the crisis.
We congratulate to all volunteers and humanitarian workers happy Red Cross and Red Crescent day!
